It’s really not possible to satisfy everyone.

A day before Intra Class Competition was successfully organized in the school for the PPW (Classes Nursery to I) students.  There were 30 participants from Class Nursery to I who took part in it.
Most of their parents had also turned up to witness the performance.
All Judges were from the senior wing.  The weather remained good and the whole competition went off as per the plan.  Almost all the participants performed to their best.  Not a single participant got stuck in between.  They all completed their performance with full confidence.  Of course, there were few who were unable to speak into the microphone as good as others did.  But Judges never took a note of the factor while judging PPW students for after all they were aware of the fact that the kids were making use of the microphone for the first time in their time lives.
On the basis of combined judgment the prizes were given away to the top three performers among 10 participants for each class.
After half an hour or so one of the parents of the participants came over to my office to meet me. They expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the judgment as their ward had not got the prize.  They genuinely asked me as to what answer they should give to their ward’s question that why he hasn’t got the prize and they also asked for tips regarding how to enable their ward to enhance his level of performance so that he could win prizes.
I tried to convince them by putting across the following points :
a)     All Judges were form the senior wing and were not knowing the participants.  So chances of any partiality were not there.
b)    There were four Judges whose marks were added to Judge the performance.  So chance of subjectivity was reduced.
c)     Along with enabling the little ones to participate in such competition we also need to guide our children to face defeat gracefully.
d)    There can be no guarantee given by anyone that a participant will win a competition.
They tried next to point out that the third prize holder’s performance was not up to the mark.  For this again I had to point out that there were four Judges and they as parents should avoid such feelings that the judges were biased.
Father appeared to be more logical and understanding   and was soft in his approach but unfortunately I was not able to convince the mother regarding my views as much as I would have loved to.
Hope in future they have better experiences with us.

A 6 year old son and his father were moving around near Vijay Chowk of New Delhi. The son saw the building of parliament and he asked :
Son                  :           Why is the building round ?
Father             :           It indicates that we all are equal.
Son                  :           What happens there ?
Father             :           People meet, discuss, pass laws and tell people how to obey them.
While moving around they came across another building, The son asked :
Son                  :           Father what is that building ?
Father             :           That is the Treasury ?
Son                  :           What do people do there ?
Father             :           People meet there and distribute wealth among society.

When they went further they came across the Church of North India.
The son asked, “What building was that ?”

Father             :           People meet, create trust and distribute trust among society.
Next they came across the “St. Columbus school”.  The son asked what is that building ?
Father             :           It is a school.
Son                  :           What do they do there ?
Father             :           The school is a place where you create knowledge.
Son                  :           What is knowledge ?
Father             :           Force that creates Power, Wealth, Trust, and how to use them.

-          He requested the participants to give a standing ovation to all three of them.

-          He quoted the Couplets of Sant Kabir :
धीरे धीरे रे मना धीरे सब कुछ होए
माली सींचे सौ घड़ा रुत आये फल होए
-          He  said atom needs energy.  The atom of DPS has been provided with that energy by none other than Mr. V.K. Shunglu, the Chairman of DPS Society. We need a Messiah to propel the machine. People from all over the world learn in India.  HRD Centre at Delhi will do that.
-          He informed the members that DPS Society is aiming for having one DPS in every smart city.
-          He said smart cities need to be built around a DPS.
Mr. V.K. Shunglu, Chairman, The DPS Society                           (11:37 am)
-          His main message was “Let alone Let be.”

Session II     - (Leadership and A Vibrant School)
Dr. Kobus Neethling, President South African Creativity Foundation  (12:10 pm)
Whole Brain Leadership
-          Dr. Kobus Neethling took up the session “The Role of Leadership in Creating A whole Brain School.”
-          Dr. Kobus started his session with the statement, “Never underestimate your influence as a teacher on your students.”

-          “A lot of stuff is happening in the brain.  The more we understand the brain the better teacher we will be.”
-          The Whole Brain Leadership understands the essence.

For example, “In a particular place as the children were falling sick many leaders proposed to build a hospital.  But people with Whole Brain Leadership qualities found that as the water was polluted in the area, installation of RO plant was more important than building a hospital and when it was done the children stopped falling sick.”
-          We need leaders to come forward and remove problems from the root.
-          Page 4 of 18

5
-          A Whole Brain School can go to the roots and remove the problems.
-          It is important to remember that the way we make people feel never gets forgotten.
-          He said, “Change is the essence of life.”
-          He said the essence of a Mathematician is not to make simple things complicated but to make complicated things simple.
-          He shared the quote of Aristotle “It is the sign of the educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”
-          By pointing out this quote he said you may do it on your own but should avoid arguments.  The Whole Brain Leader avoids arguments.
-          He said, “Allow Open Minds in the school.”
-          He said the Whole Brain School promotes equal creative thinking.
-          He shared the true life events regarding his Mentor.
-          While his Mentor was on his death bed he had received various Cards, Letters from hundreds of his students. When he had gone to meet him he had found his Mentor had kept all the letters on his chest and was reading the Cards and Letters one by one.
-          He said values are important in life.
-          He quoted Edward De Bano  who had said “There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resources of all.  Without creativity there would be no progress and we would be forever repeating the same pattern.”
-          Education tries to keep everyone in a box in a majority of ways.
-          He said to think of bigger problems not of smaller things, not materialistic things that we possess.
-          He said that “Creativity is both teachable and learnable.”
-          How to introduce creativity in schools ? Attitude, Culture, Environment, 4 Skills, Fluency, Flexibility, Originality, essence, Elaboration need to be encouraged.
-          He said, “The Whole Brain Leader’s biggest quality is, he is passionate, he is courageous, and ignites passion and courage in others.”
-          He said what kind of courage is essential in the schools.
1.      On passion he quoted E.M. Foster.  “One person with passion  is better than 40 people merely interested.”
2.      He said ‘Curiosity’ and ‘Passion’ are more than ‘Intelligence’.
-          He said about the three good qualities found in every human being who has been of the age group between 85 years to 105 years.  Those three qualities are :
1.      All of them are Passionate.
2.      All of them Wake Up Early.
3.      All of them Work.
-          He motivated everyone to make their school Passionate.
-          He quoted Rollo May by saying, “The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it is conformity.”
-          Page 5 of 18

6
-          School is more of a mind game, He gave example of one of the CEOs who gave up his job in order to climb Mt. Everest.  Inspite of being well prepared he failed to climb the Mt. Everest at the final stage.  On being questioned later he said that at the Base Camp they had made him fill a form before he was allowed to climb the Mt. Everest. One of the questions was, “How do you want your body to be treated, or, what do you want us to do with your body?” He said that, that question weighed so much on his mind that he could not make it to the Mt. Everest.
-          “Courage is less physical but more of a mind game.”
-          “More than physical courage is the spiritual courage which is needed to succeed.”
The Whole Brain Leaders leads others from ordinary to beyondness.
-          He spoke about the book written by him “Am I Average or Am I Stupid.”
-          He said our brains are great mirrors, whatever we show it will reflect the same. You show the good things, it will reflect good things, you put in progress it will give out progress, you point problems it will give out problems.
-          He spoke about teaching with your whole brain learning.
-          He spoke on L1, L2, R2, R1 theories in which L1 stands for Information, L2 stands for Lists / Time, R2 stands for Groups & R1 stands for Informal, Colourful, Visual etc.

-          He said negativity is the most dangerous element.
-
Creativity, Wisdom, Joy, Passion, Courage, Opportunity, Finding
Negativity , Problems, Paralysis, Torments

He said 96% people suffering from tension will not be cured with medicine because it is from within.

-          Keep the school an above the line school where you have more of Creativity, Wisdom, Joy, passion, Courage, Opportunity, Finding.

7
The points highlighted by the above persons were :
DPS in India is a leading educational organization.
The word belief has got two dimensions : schools need to build a) Capacity for tomorrow b) Trust for people.
Schools need to inculcate Skills, Values and Ideas.
Children of DPS generally land up in USA.
More than economic growth it is the distribution that is more of concern.
We are growing but we are growing unequal.
Human beings are the most equally distributed on planet Earth.
But some regions develop others do not. Why ?
It is not a matter of growth but difference in equality that creates problems.
Distribution in Education is a contributory factor in widening inequalities.
It is not between those who are educated or uneducated but between those who have learnt more and those who have learnt less.
It is not the years of schooling but quality of learning in schools that matters.  250 million children are not able to read or do Maths.
Children who are unable to read class II books in V grade, score higher grades in Class XII. How ?
At times people say in certain schools English is also taught in local language. What will people learn ?
More than concentrating towards Educational Pedagogical Systems we need to improve subject competencies.
Subject / Class teachers need to be empowered to take decisions at their level for matters related to their areas.
On a lighter side he added the following :
Those who cannot learn teach,
Those who cannot teach, teach teachers,
Those who cannot teach teachers, become Principals
Those who cannot become Principals become Planners.

8
Dr. J.C. Pant, Principal DPS Bulandshahr ended the session with the following statement, “Teach to test, test to text, students score. Go beyond the text and students fail.” Give it a thought.
Post Tea session                                (4:10 pm)
Session IV -  (Learning To Be : An Agenda for Values)
The Awakened Citizens Programme Value Education for standard VII, VIII & IX.
Swami Shantatmananda, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi
Swamiji began the session with Swami Vivekanand’s quote, “When I see a Rainbow in the sky my heart leaps up !.”
Swamiji added to it and said, “My heart leaps up whenever I see a teacher.”
Swamiji reflected on the following :
How much %age one has scored is appreciated. No system has been set to test truthfulness, honesty, integrity.”
He said the report cards read “Chemistry the child got these many marks, Physics the child has got these many marks, but, as a man what have you scored ?”
He said, “Tell a Nursery child that your teacher is wrong and see how she reacts?”
We as teachers are role models.  Each behavior of the teacher is emulated.
Ultimate aim of education is to realize God.  It can also be said ultimate aim of education is to build capability of self assessments.
He said, “Total knowledge, now it is available on google.  Schools have to change from knowledge providers to institutes which will develop creativity.
Swamiji ended the session by saying, “Each one of us has a talent manifesting in us that has to be found, exposed and excelled.”

Day 2 : Saturday, 9th April 2016
Mrs. Vinita Kher, Director, HRDC, The DPS Society, briefed the participants about the proceedings of the day.
“A Leader sees further than what others can see, a Leader plans further than what others can plan.”
Session – I – (Leadership and the Alchemy of Teaching)
This session was taken up by Mr. Debashish Chatterjee, IIM, Lucknow, Former Director IIM, Kozhikode.
He said, “For every incumbent there is an insurgent. Problem is, an incumbent is visible but the insurgent is not.”
He shared a joke of a boss being ordered for coffee by his subordinate.
He advised to put off the cells by saying that he should be taken seriously for he was not an entertainer.
He said, “A Leader is everyday and always bombarded with work after work.”
When incumbent is busy dealing with the insurgent he is not sure from where will the new insurgent sprout up.
Parroting ideas are hashed and rehashed in schools.
He said, “Silence is not economy of speech Silence is the economy of thoughts.”
He took up the question, ‘Can you teach the Zebra  Algebra’ ?
Zebra cannot think and will kick anyone standing behind, even if he is a Principal or a Vice Principal !
Principal when bombarded with incessant work he will act like the Zebra.
He needs to have intellect to differentiate.
Under the Alchemy of Learning he said, “There were three areas of learning : Identity, Productivity, Connectivity.
Under Identity he said,  “We all need to reflect upon the question “What are we beyond our business  cards ?”
Under Productivity he said, “One needs to reflect upon that are we capable of producing love, hatred or more problems.”

10
Under Connectivity he said, “How well we can connect ourselves to everyone in our work place as well at our homes.” At work place for us how well are we connected with our students, parents, students, colleagues, class IV staff ?  At homes how well are we connected with our spouse, children, siblings, parents, neighbours etc ?
“People do not make good mirrors, now-a-days”.  Does it mean anything ?
Having a position does not make one a leader. Know yourself who you are.
He gave a beautiful analogy of Hub Rim and Spokes.
He touched upon the infinitive and finite things around us, for example, “How many different sights can we see ? How many feelings can we feel with our skin ? etc.
As Principals we need to have a very high degree of differentiation capability.
In a teaching learning space we need to accept the differentiation.
As a parent if one feels he / she “owns” the kid then it is all gone.
A crow carrying fish is being chased by other crows so who are the crows chasing ? The crow or the fish?
Similarly as Principal if others are criticizing who are they and what are they doing so ?
Learning is constantly going back and relearning.
Our needs are surprisingly very less.
It’s a small world. We should have big thoughts & work with love.
Small seed grows into a big tree.  He gave example of Tendulkar’s habit of hitting sixes and immediately seeing the ground in order to prepare for hitting another one.
Unfortunately we get so busy with execution that we stop preparing.
‘p = P – i’
Small ‘p’ is ‘performance’ Capital ‘P’ is ‘Potential’ and small ‘i’ is ‘Interference’.
He shared an example of a mosquito and an elephant wherein when the mosquito sitting on the elephant feels he is moving the elephant.
We need to shed off our Identity Syndrome.
Being Principal / Teacher is a privilege not an accomplishment

School should be a space not a place.
At DPS Bangalore South Smart Classes are used by the teachers through WiFi.
At DPS Surat all teachers are being given I Pads with all applications.  The school has a Teaching and Learning Centre.
Mrs. Tanwar of DPS Dwarka said, “What school’s think of Library conveys what the schools think about education.”
Computers are incredibly fast but stupid.
Humans are slow and inaccurate but intelligent.
Put  together they are powerful beyond imagination.
How to remain a master in the technological based world ? Suggestions given by participants were :
-          Be critical
-          Raise the bar
-          Demand the students to do something with the information
-          Page 11 of 18

12
-          Do not expect less from technology
-          Can teachers create ?
-          Can students create ?
-          Chaotic situation leads to thinking, thinking leads to answers, answers lead to solutions.
-          Together we learn.
Dr. J.C. Pant said, “Technology will make teachers more important.”
Let’s not be a communicator of information alone.
He said, “Brand is not important, For example, Yudisthar and Duryodhana went to the same school.”
He said, “Those whom DPS rejects does not mean they are not good. Example, Dronacharya also rejected Eklavya.”
“Degrees are not important.” Bill Gates was a drop out.
Technology can be used for large learning.
“Power corrupts politicians, Power Point corrupts education.”  “Learning is not broadcasting.”
Remember CBSE exam results are not the end of educational achievement.
“Teachers should learn to know the worth of the Subject. “
He spoke about the four waves :
1.      First wave of Industrial Revolution was in 1784 which was driven by the Steam.
2.      Second wave was in 1870 which was driven by Electricity and mass production.
3.      Third wave came up in 1970 which was driven by Electronics, IT and Automation.
4.      Fourth wave came up in 2015 and it was driven by Aeronautical Engineering, Robotics, 3D Printing, Nano Technology, Energy Storage, Quantum computers etc.

As leaders we need to find “What is wrong?” and not “Who is wrong?”

People do not grow old they become old when they stop growing up.

The Main problem in life is, “We have 100s of problems .”
