'Hua' Vs 'Haua'

'Hua' Vs 'Haua'
There are people who believe in completing their tasks with no hue and cry.  They love to convey to their colleagues or seniors that their task(s) is / are done with ('Hua').
On the other hand we have people who have the tendency to create a mountain our of mole ('Haua').
You need to decide which category of the person would prefer to be recognized with.  You want your colleagues, boss to recognize you to be a person who will do his job with no fuss or the one who will create a 'Haua' out of it ? The choice is yours.

"Saach Kaho Sun Le Sabhe Jin Prem Kiyo Tin Hi Prabh Paayo"

Howsoever we may try to churn the water, we may at the maximum see some bubbles or foams but we will never be able to get 'ghee' from it. We can never convert water into tasty butter. We can never attain smoothness from churning the water nor can we get strength from it.

This will come only when the milk is churned.

Similarly without true love and devotion all visible formalities that we may perform, meditation that we may do or knowledge that we may gain are in vain.

We can never get peace and pleasure out of this. Hence, true love and devotion is a must .

While preparing sugar syrup for the sweets the cook sprinkles milk in it which helps all the impurities to settle down. Similarly in all are religion, tasks, meditation and efforts we need to sprinkle love and devotion which will help the impurities of our mind to get washed away and we will be blessed to see the light of knowledge.

Santa Claus Concept

One of the biggest lies that is told to the little ones in the whole world must be about Santa Claus.  But it is also one of the cutest and sweetest one.  Children really look forward to the gifts that Santa would bring for them.  The carols sung during the Christmas time convey so many lessons for the kids to pick up.  The best carol ever in this regard that we were taught to sing in the school by none other than our beloved Anoop Ambrose Sir, Robert Sir and Ralf Sir was :

"Hey you better watch out
You better not pout
You better not cry
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming today.
He sees you when you are sleeping
He knows when you are awake
He knows if you been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake."

The first stanza prepares the ground by warning the child that it will be futile on his part to unnecessarily pout or cry because Santa won't like to see him doing so.

So if one wants Santa to bring for him, his desired gift he needs to better follow the instructions and stay happy.

In the second stanza I remember when I used to sing it in class III way back in 1973 - 74 I used to understand the fact that the writer of the carol has been clever to let us (the kids) know that Santa comes down to see us when we are asleep and knows when we are 'awake'.  So this way no question rises that why we can't see Santa.

The writer further also tells us that like a super magician Santa knows whether we have been bad or good throughout the year.  Because of this we as kids would surely try to follow all good habits in order to impress him.

I feel this one lie must have helped millions of kids in the entire world to follow the right path.  Why can't people of different faiths follow the same technique with their own kids by using their won Gods and characters ?

Giving up on Milk Bottle by Babies

When Lying is Good !

Giving up of Milk Bottle by my Daughter :

As every other child my daughter Navleen Kaur too at the age of around 2 and a half years loved her milk bottle and was reluctant to give it up.

My wife Rina and me had to do little bit of planning so as to get her give up her milk bottle.
Once when we had gone to the NTPC Hospital Jamnipali I had requested one of my friends (I'm unable to recall his name) who was working as a Pharmacist in the hospital to ask us to submit the milk bottle when we would go to him to get the medicines in the presence of my daughter.

So when he did so he specifically conveyed to Navleen Kaur that she needs to submit the milk bottle next time to which she had agreed. When we went to the hospital next we remembered to carry all her milk bottles in a bag and had pretended at the medicine counter that they were submitted.

From that day onwards she never demanded to drink milk from the bottle.

Thankfully in those days online shopping wasn't as rampant as these days.  Else I'm sure at around 2.5 or 3 she would have suggested to order for the milk bottle through Amazon or Flipcart !

Advantages of living with parents even after crossing 50s

1.      Feeling of being a child still prevails.
2.      We still can call out 'Mummy', 'Papa'.
3.      We always have someone at home.  We don't have to lock or open the house.
4.      We remain perfectly disciplined when we go on outings with our parents.
5.      We can keep visiting the past and relish all the good things and also talk about bad experiences which really help to make the bonds stronger and also make us strong.
6.      We remain health conscious.
7.      Parents take care of the garden as well as the pets.
8.      We can rely upon their rich and vast experience at any given point of time.
9.      They are rich source of spiritualism.
10.  They prove to be an excellent link to connect us with our own children (their grand children).  They convey to them episodes from our lives which we may not even think of sharing.

Eat well or Granny will become ill

Bharti Mam conveyed that as her younger daughter, who is in class VII was not into eating properly, her mother had told her a fake story of having met a sadhu in the market who had asked her, "I think you have a grand daughter who is not eating properly ?"  To which she had to say, "Yes".

The sadhu said, "If your grand daughter continues to do so then very soon you will fall sick and then pass away."

This scared her daughter so much that out of her real love and concern for her grandmother she started eating well.  Such fake stories at times if they can solve our little but important problems are not bad.  Later of course when the child will grow up she will love her grand mother all the more for telling her a tall tale.

Drinking water and thanking God, Before Sleeping in the Night

I can recall the time when my sister Manjeet Kaur and I were very young. Our youngest Mamaji,  Inder Singh Lamba, had come over to our place in Jeypore Odisha.
One night before going to sleep he had narrated a story to us about why it's important to drink water and thank God before we go to sleep.  He had told us that if we go to sleep without drinking water then our soul may go out of the body in search of water.  At home naturally the only place where the soul would go was the kitchen area.  Those days drinking water used to be stored in earthen pots or copper vessels with a cover on top.  The soul would open the cover and get into the pot or vessel to quench its thirst.
He had said that it was important for the soul to return into the body in a stipulated period of time, say 5 to 10 minutes.  If it would fail to do so then next morning the person would be found dead.  Now normally, he had assured that, the soul would return to the body after quenching its thirst.  But by chance if someone else also happens to go to the pot to drink the water at the same time and then covers he pot with the plate then the poor soul wouldn't be able to escape the pot and return to the body.
This narration hade my sister and I so scared that till date we are in the habit of not only drinking water before hitting the bad but have also developed the habit of keeping small filled water bottles around our pillows so that in case thirst wakes us up we will have water around us to quench our thirst.
Though the story of the soul going out of the body was a fake one it has helped us to develop a good habit to drink water and thank God before sleeping which is good for both our health and the soul.

Vices of the Mind ( Sin) & the Body (Crime)

Planning to kill someone or injure someone, to snatch away or steal others wealth, planning to slander someone are all vices of mind.

Killing someone, or injuring someone, i.e., causing or inflecting physical injuries. raping someone are all vices of the body.

When we think of doing something bad like harming or looting a person we sin and when we really do it we commit a crime. Most of us are not criminals but we surely are great sinners.

We need to aspire to even avoid becoming a sinner.  For doing so we need to train our minds to remain focused on good aspects of life.  We shouldn't give space to any negativity for anyone or anything and stay positive for everything.

"Forgive us over sins as we forgive who sin against us."

'Vices of the Tongue'

Spreading rumours, speaking for discouraging, speaking harshly and speaking for no reason are the vices of our tongues. The more we keep our tongues under control the better it is under all circumstances.

Socrates three filters test teaches us to be cautious before spreading rumours about our friends, relatives or colleagues. He advices to check whether the thing that you want to convey is 1) True 2) Is good about the person and 3) Will it do good to other or society at large. If you are uncertain about the thing that you want to convey then it is better to keep quite and save yourself from spreading something that is wrong which may spoil the person's reputation or create problem for him.

Socrates goes a step further and says use the second filter as well.  Even if you are sure that what you want to convey is true about the person then think before you speak whether the information you want to share will do good to the person.  If your conscience tells you that it will not do him good then it will be better to keep quite.  Socrates advices for the third filter at this stage.  That is if your conscience tells you that what you know is true but will be bad for your friend, yet it will do good in a larger context to the society then you should feel free to convey this information you have by all means.

It is a scientific fact that injury on the tongues gets healed quickest but injury caused by the tongue never gets healed.  We should always take care of not speaking discouraging words or harshly with anyone. Not even with our juniors and those who serve us like the house helpers or office helpers or people involved in cleaning our roads and sewages. They are also human beings like us and have hearts and feelings just as we do.  If you learn to speak nicely with them take it for granted that they will not only feel good about it but the quality of their work will also become better which in the longer run will prove to be good for your peace of mind.  Do good to others and it will surely come back to you.  This is 'Karma'.

Speaking unnecessarily also is bad.  It wastes our energy and keeps us away from rightful thinking and also from doing the right thing.

Hence, it is important for the betterment of our ownselves to abstain our tongues from rumour mongering, discouraging someone or speaking harshly and unnecessarily in our lives and thereby contribute towards building a beautiful, wonderful and peaceful world.

“Turn Insults & Ridicule into Challenges”

It is essential at times to let people laugh at you in ridicule or for that matter even insult you.

I remember vividly two such occasions when I was laughed at and ridiculed and also insulted.  Both of these proved to be good for me in the longer run.

First was when I had opted for English compositing in my Graduation.  One of my closest friend’s uncle on learning that I had opted for English Composition had ridiculed me with a big laughter in a big gathering and had discouraged me by saying that till date no one in Vikram Deb College, Jeypore had scored more than 38 marks in the subject.  I had kept quite and had decided to prove him wrong.  When the final results were declared I was extremely delighted because I had scored 57 marks in English Composition and was glad when my friend’s uncle had appreciated it.

Second occasion was during my final year of Post Graduation. Though I had done my schooling in an English medium school, only a handful of teachers including my Principal were in fact from English medium background but majority of the teachers were from Govt. School background.  In VD College, Jeypore too there wasn’t much of an exposure for learning English.  Inspite of these shortcomings couple of my friends and I were keen to pick up the language.

I had selected English Literature as my subject for my Post Graduation from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack. It was a challenge to study there which was considered to be the best college of North Eastern Part our country along with 87 students who were originally from the same college itself.

Those days I used to survive on Rs. 450/- to Rs. 500/- per month. (1983 to 1985)

I had noticed that few good students used to go to one Mr. Sadanand Parida sir who was good in his subject knowledge for guidance for which he used to charge Rs. 300/- per month.  This was a huge amount for me so I wasn’t able to afford the same.  However, I had planned to go to him in my second or final year when last six month would be left.

But when I had approached him in my final year for taking me in as his student I was deeply aggrieved when he had bluntly refused by saying, ‘It is not possible to include new student in my batch.  You should have joined the batch in the first year itself.’ He had further added that, “Moreover I take in students in my home batch only when I have confidence in them.”  This was quite insulting for me because he had said all this in a gathering of 10 to 15 students.

All students basic target in those days in Post Graduation class used to be to score above 54% marks for becoming eligible for becoming a Lecturer.

After Sadanand Parida Sir’s denial to guide me at his house I became more serious and went through all the original text books of both the years.

When the results were declared I was extremely happy to note that including me only 5 students of our batch had managed to score above 54% marks.  With 55% marks I was 3rd rank holder in the college and 6th in the University.

On visiting the college I had gone to the staff room of English Department and had peeped in.  I was in for a very pleasant surprise when along with other Lecturers who were congratulating me on my success,  Sadanand Parida Sir had got up from his chair and had come towards me to shake my hand and to pat on my shoulder.  He had said by pointing towards his chair, “Hello Sukhwant, now you are eligible to join us and sit on this chair.”  I was extremely happy and elated.

Had my friend’s uncle not ridiculed me and had Sadanand Sir not used those harsh words probably I would not have done so well.

Hence, I strongly feel that we should not let ridicule or insult or harsh words get into our psychic and go into depression. Instead we should take it as a challenge and prove the persons wrong.

“Seek Wisdom Too Along With Skills”

“When God blesses us with a special skill we need to pray to Him to bless us with wisdom also to use the skill well and for the betterment of the world.”

For example if one is blessed with the capability of penning down his thoughts in good language, i.e., good writing skill but he uses this skill only to mud sling others and to provide wrong, harmful, baseless and demeaning information to the society we can say that he has the skill to write well but terribly lacks the wisdom to use it.  He will surely do more harm to the society with his writings than good.

On the other hand one blessed with both writing skill and wisdom will do the society good by writing good, motivating and inspiring things in order to uplift the down trodden people and provide them greater heights of success and happiness.

Guru Arjun Devji has so rightly said,

‘Nirvere d ver kare tis da bhala kiv hoe ?
Jo sab da bhala kare tis da bura kiv hoe ?

The ones who seek bad of the unbiased people how can goodness fall upon them and the ones who always seek good of others how can anything bad befall upon them.

Mind Vs Wealth

‘Mind Vs Wealth’
“More gold has been mined from the thoughts of men than has ever been taken from the earth.”
Values, morality, principles, honesty, truthfulness, being trustworthy, and faithful are far superior than the so called precious gems, diamonds, pearls, emeralds, gold etc.
One may possess materialistic richness but if he is not able to talk well with people he will have very few friends.  A poor person who has time to lend his ears to others and has a sweet tongue will be liked, loved and appreciated than a person who is rich but is rude and has no time for others.
The above saying, (“More gold …… the earth.”) also conveys that power of mind is far superior than the ‘power of gold’.
Thoughts and ideas of engineers who are not rich can convert a mountainous area into a dam; Thought and ideas of poets, philosophers and writers who are not rich can change the way people think and live.  On the other hand a rich man bereft of innovative thoughts and ideas may still be acceptable in the society but a person with negative thoughts will bring more harm to the world than can be thought of.
Hence it can be said that,  “Good thoughts were, are and will remain more important than materialistic wealth.”

Need for Electrical Crematoruims in India

“Need for Electrical Crematoriums”
Till date I have been to the cremation of 25-30 persons.  Most of them of men and very few women. Except for one new born baby who was buried rest all were cremated.  Only one case of my cousin was electrically cremated.  Rest all were cremated with the help of woods.
Till date I haven’t been to the cremation ground for picking up of the ashes.  Only in case of my cousin, whose body was electrically cremated, I saw his remains which couldn’t get burned.  They were a bunch of small bones which were brought out in a hot iron container.  The bones were still simmering and giving out smoke.  We had poured water on them which had got drained out from the holes in the container.  After washing the bones with three to four packets of milk the container was carried to the nearby river (Suvarnrekha) and all bones were emptied into it.  The whole process from cremation of my cousin till his bones were immersed in the river took about 2 hours.
I often wonder after returning from the cremation grounds that how the bodies must be burning ?  Are the logs burning properly ?  Are the body parts intact or have got spilled over ?  We also come across cases where stray dogs or certain people carry away the body parts. At times we hear that while burning the bodies rise up (due to contraction of muscles)  which I’m sure must be pretty odd and scary to see.  And then on the third day when the close relatives and friends who go to collect the ashes how they must be doing so.  I sincerely feel that more number of electrical cremation units should come up in all places so that we can get the bodies of our dead relatives and friends burnt in a more dignified manner.
A smart city needs to have the following :
-         a well maintained morgue.
-         an air conditioned vehicle to carry the dead to the burial / cremation ground with dignity.
-         an Electrical Crematorium.
-         an outlet where all paraphernalia needed in the last rites of all communities is made available.

Regarding the Arrest of Mr Sudarshan Sonar Principal DPS Indore

This is in response to the arrest made by the Indore Police of Mr. Sudarshan Sonar, Principal, DPS Indore as per the order made by the DM Indore on the basis of the complaints made by the parents of DPS Indore and specially by the ones who lost their children in the tragic road accident on 5th of January 2018.

It was undoubtedly a tragic event which along with the bus driver took away the lives of four children and injured many others.  Our deep sympathies lie with the parents and family members of the deceased.
Prima fascia what we can understand from the media reports of the accident it indicates that the driver was driving the vehicle at a very high speed due to which he lost control over it and the vehicle after crossing the barrier went across the road and hit the oncoming trailer.  This is a case of rash driving.  Drivers license needs to be checked whether he was ever taken to task by the traffic police for his rash driving.  It is also reported that the vehicle was having its fitness certificate.  How come the Traffic Police or the RTO is not being arrested for their negligence ?

Why has the Principal been targeted by the parents ?

So many accidents take place throughout the country.  Never before the fitness of the vehicles have been taken into account of those accidents. So why is this Indore incident being treated so differently ?

Why are the owners of the school not being taken into account ?

Responsibility of running the school including the academics as well as the non academics part does lie with the Principal. But we also need to keep in mind the owners of the schools who directly or indirectly play  a vital role in getting the suggestions, decisions of the Principals implemented.  We can’t ignore the fact that the Principal is after all an employee of the owner of the school. He can at the most suggest or remind the owner of the decisions taken regarding running of the school.  The onus of agreeing & implementing the suggestions and the decisions more or less lies in the hands of the owners.

Arresting Mr. Sudarshan Sonar and sending him to the Central Jail by the concerned authorities is shocking, sad and surprising.

Shocking because why he alone has been targeted ? Why all others have been spared ?

Sad because by not only arresting a Principal but also sending him to a judicial custody for 10 days a very wrong example has been set.  By doing so what kind of message are we sending to the society in general and to the students in particular ?

Surprising because there are uncountable vehicles more rickety than the ill fated bus still plying on the roads of our country with no one taking any action against them.

If this is justifiable then the Traffic Incharges, Road Builders, RTOs, DMs should be put behind bars for all the accidents that are taking place on the roads every day.

The court should show mercy towards the Principal and bury him from the charges of culpable murder and negligence of his duties at the earliest and the society at large should help to restore his reputation.
