Random thoughts: LIfe goes on.....

The bees are busy colleting the honey
Men are busy running after the money
The gazels are grazing the grass
Scientists are busy studying the planet Mars.
An orthopaedician wants an alternative to bones
A biologist dreams of his clones.
Soldiers are getting ready for their missions
Philosophers around the world
Are trying their best to improve everyone’s vision….

Random thoughts: Who is a modern man?

What is it like being a modern person ?
First and foremost requirement is
To give up all old values
like:-
Being faithful in love;
Trying to be honest;
To touch the feet of our parents and elders;
Helping the neighbours......

Poem: Let's Learn to Bear

Let’s Learn to bear

Life is full of flaws
Of our own as well as others.
The problems perplex us.
We feel like flying off on our feathers.
But feathers we have none.
We have to learn to cope up
With the hardships, which may not be right.
It all depends on His might.
He makes us enjoy and suffer both
Strange are His ways and laws.
None have understood the mysticism of life
None would ever be able to do so.
But the very fact of marveling at things
Is also restricted to few.
These few may be called as the blessed ones
Or the doomed ones
As the case may be
Blessed ones are those who have
No hearts to bleed & feel.
No eyes to see
No ears to hear
No hands to give
No mind to share
Doomed ones are those who have all these.
We so often put ourselves amongst the doomed ones.
For in reality most of us are the blessed ones.
Let’s all pray to the God
To put us amongst the doomed ones
So that we may learn
To bleed, to feel, to see, to hear
To share, to give.
In short,
To bear.

Poem:Bless us Lord wiht understandig to understand Your ways

Why have you given poverty ?
O! Lord !
Why do people have to
Go through so much suffering ?
Why everyone can’t have
An access to good health
Good food, good shelter
And most important of all
Good thoughts ?
Why does one get
All the blessings and
On the other hand one is made to suffer so much ?
It’s not possible for
Mortals like us
To fathom these secrets
Of yours
Teach us, guide us,
Bless us with capability
To cherish your blessings
As well as
To endure your sufferings
Without ever forgetting,
You, dear Lord.

Poem: Parting

Parting

When we two parted
In silence and tears.
Half broken hearted
To severe for years.
Pale grew thy cheek and cold
Colder thy kiss;
Truly that hour fore told
Sorrow to this.

The dew of the morning
Sunk chill on my brow.
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now
Thy vows are all broken
And light is thy frame;
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shames.

They name these before me,
A knell to mine ear ;
A shudder comes over me
Why wert though so dear ?
They know not I know thee
Who knew thee too well;
Long, long shall I rue thee,
Too deeply to tell.

In secret we met
In silence I grieve,
That thy heart could forget ;
Thy spirit deceive.
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?
With silence and tears.

Poem: We Need to learn to appreciate smaller things of life

Life
Life is indeed full of wonders
At each step we come across unexpected things
Which are incomprehensible?
At times the life appears to be sweet
At times bitter
Our life revolves around people who we know
Both our friends and relatives.
When good things happen to them
We are greatly pleased
When they suffer
So do we
When we are pleased
Life seems to be too short
When we aren’t
It seems to be too long.
We need to learn
To look at the brighter side of things.
I know its better said than done.
It’s because of this I said learn.
We ought to train ourselves
To appreciate small things.
For there lies great hidden treasures.
Smile of an infant has the potential
To relieve us from all our days fatigue
Innocent talks of toddlers
Do make us feel light
And shed the gloom of night
And encouraging words leaves its mark
To dispel the dark.

God was with me But I wasn't with Him!

On 20th Jan 09 I had met with an accident and had a narrow escape from death. I saw death coming to me for more than four to five times within, I presume, 2 to 3 seconds. I was riding a scooter and had my father in law Mr.Harjeet Singh Oberai with me, as a pillion rider. He was sitting with both his legs on one side. We were descending the Shastri Bridge at Jabalpur and were heading towards the Chotti line crossing of Gorakhpur. It was 6 pm and the traffic from both the sides was very heavy and must have been moving at a speed of 30 to 40 kms/hr. We were overtaking an auto rickshaw and everything was appearing to be normal. All of a sudden a Maruti 800 car of white colour ( No MP 20 __ 1352 ) tried to overtake both auto and us. On realizing that the space was insufficient the car dashed with our scooter and for a sec or two both the car and our scooter moved together while rubbing each other. Before I could do anything the car moved ahead and as we had become imbalanced we fell on the road on the right side right in front of the vehicles coming from ahead. My first brush with death was when I hit the road with full impact. My head hit the road but was saved because of my turban. Due to the momentum I kept moving towards a luxury coach which was coming from ahead. I was heading directly towards the front of the bus but due to driver's alertness I escaped from hitting it for he managed to go to his left. But still it was not over. I was now rolling towards the back wheels of the bus. I sensed that this was the end. But again miraculously my right arm hit something, either the road or the side body of the bus for I was thrown aside and I narrowly missed the back wheels of the bus. At this moment also my body was still rolling and I saw a white car heading towards me which was trying to overtake the bus. Here too my luck was great that the driver of the car saw what was happening and stopped within an inch or so away from my flat body which was lying on the road. All this took place within 3 to 4 seconds. After realizing that I had escaped from death as well as any major injury I turned around to look out for my father in law. I saw him lying on the road with his head down. He was bleeding profusely. I was very worried at that moment for him. But it was a great relief to see that he was not injured seriously. The bridge of his spectacles had cut his nose from where he was bleeding. He too had got bruises like me on the knees and hands. We immediately stopped an auto and went to the hospital. Meanwhile the Maruti car had escaped. But few people had noted the number and had given it to us. In the hospital the doctor advised us to apply ice for two hours to all the places where we had sustained wounds. At around 8:15pm the wounds were bandaged. This ice treatment was really very helpful for lot of pain was reduced and moreover there were no swellings. The accident really taught me that in life we got to be aware that accidents can take place from behind too. One regret which I have now is that during those crucial moments while I was escaping from the jaws of death, I was not able to remember God. I was only trying to avoid getting hit. It proves that still there is long long way for me to come close to the God. I was not close to Him, but He sure was and protected both me and my father in law to escape from something which could have been too serious than what it turned out to be.

An Analogy between buying clothes and selecting teachers

While buying clothes we do pick up the best which however depends on how much can we afford. Once we start using these clothes we realize that few of the clothes turn out to be very good comfortable and durable whereas, few which had appeared to very attractive turn out to be bad and uncomfortable.

Similarly through the recruitment process we sincerely try to select the best candidates. It’s later on we realize that few of the teachers turn out to be excellent in all aspects and its really comfortable to work with them whereas few of them turn out to be pain in the neck.

Given an Opportunity

Given an opportunity I would like to bring about the following changes :

I would abolish all states and divide the country into four zones. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkatta will be the capitals of these zones.
I shall set up animal breeding centers throughout the country and encourage scientists to enhance the quality of animals. On the other hand abandoned, stray and diseased animals will be sent to the slaughter houses.
I shall make begging a crime. Old and handicapped beggars will be sent to relief centers. People found begging will be caught and made to work in these centers.
I shall abolish reservations based on caste system. Free education will be provided to all whose parents live below the poverty line.
Total education system will be privatized. Each educational institute will be answerable to the Ministry of Education directly.
I shall impose minimum qualification criteria for people contesting elections.
One child norm will be strictly imposed.
I shall make it imperative for each and every citizen to declare his assets.
I shall ban all religion based parties from contesting elections for MPs & MLAs posts.
I shall also ban all religious processions.
Expenditure on public functions will be slashed by 80%.

Path to Glory through Faith

Things keep changing so often
We tend to get used to the things around us.
We get entangled into the webs of complacency.
So much so that when the time comes for a change
We do feel
Sad for leaving out the past
We do become worried for the present
We become apprehensive of our future.
But then we do get guided upon by
The INNER SELF towards the future
Towards the UNKNOWN with confidence
Which helps us to attain the unattainable.

Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev ji though Japji Saheb

All my pilgrimage and holy bath will be accomplished if you accept me. Without your acceptance nothing can happen. In whatever I have seen around in the nature I have observed that nothing is possible without your help. Our mind and heart will become a treasure trove if we follow even once saying of the almighty i.e., God is one and is there in everyone. I may not forget this point.

Random Thoughts Remembering Anand Thawait

The mind goes blank. It happens when I pick the pen and have a paper to write on. I’m sure it happens with many of us. So many thoughts keep going on in mind but indeed it becomes so difficult to pen them down. I really envy those who have the knack of expressing themselves in writing.

The other day one of my students who had qualified for his MBBS and had been my student for about 6 years told me that he has maintained a diary and has been writing in it various things discussed or advice given by me in the class for all these years. I didn’t get the chance of seeing what he had written for I didn’t meet him afterwards but have a desire to do so.

I have come across many students who have a flair for writing and feel bad at the fact that they don’t take to it seriously. I consider both speaking and writing as skills of communication. Communication, in whichever form it may be, should be meaningful, should fulfill the purpose and last but not the least should be interesting. Hence, in order to be a good communicator one should have both command over the language as well as should know what he wants to communicate. For achieving this one has to constantly keep in touch with the language skills and also keep searching for etc. knowledge

Random Thoughts on B.Ed

It’s indeed a matter of great sadness that one simple degree of B.Ed entitles a person to get a regular job with a pay for which justifiable output is not provided by them. On the other hand we have cases wherein we have teachers with far greater output capabilities, integrity and a zeal to work who are being denied the opportunity of getting a regular scale because of not having completed their B.Eds.

I also fail to understand the concept of providing B.Ed correspondence course by IGNOU only to the regular candidates. This is something of a vicious circle type. Institute will regularize a teacher only if he/ she is a B.Ed and B.Ed institute would provide B.Ed facilities only to those candidates who are on regular grades.

Duties of Overall Activity Incharge

By keeping in mind the skills possessed by the teacher of the school and in consultation with the Principal he should prepare the list of all the Activities which are feasible to be had.

Some of the activities which a school like ours may have are :-

Duties of Activity Incharges

Besides the normal academic curricula it is quite necessary for the students to get the opportunity of taking part in some co-curricular activities. Once an Activity is allotted the teacher should prepare well for the same and try his best to generate an interest among the students and also to provide them with the necessary input for enhancing their skill in that particular field.

He should :

be punctual in reporting to his allotted room / ground.
Maintain record of every activity class regarding what was done.
Submit a written report, which is to be read out in the Morning Assembly by the House Perfect, regarding the total work done during the session.

Duties of Overall House Warden

divide the students from Class II onwards into Houses.
Ensure equal number of girls and boys from each class.
Maintain a register for the whole school or section
Update his record on new admissions and ensure that the House Warden is informed about the new entraint and has also changed his record.
Ensure that House Warden are associated with House Tutors

He shouldn’t :

change the House of a student

Duties of House Inchages/Wardens

As I don’t have the experience of having worked in a residential school it shall be impertinent on my part to comment upon the duties which a teacher has to perform as a House Master in a residential school. With whatever I could gather from a friend of mine Mr. Balbir Singh Dhir, who worked as an English Teacher for many years in the Scindias at Gwalior and presently is working as the Principal in one of the prestigious schools at Indore, and with what I saw at Daly college Indore I can say that the responsibilities of a House Master in the schools is for greater than the non-residential schools.

Basically in Days school the House Warden (Master) has the following duties to perform :-

He should :-

note down the names of the students allotted to his House class wise in the register meant for it.
Whenever House period is allotted he should be prompt in reaching the class.
Encourage among students a competitive spirit.
Try to recognize the special talents possessed by students in his House and prepare them for various Inter House Competitions.
Keep a track of all Inter House Competitions and hand over the names of participants to the Inter House Competitions in charge.
Inform the students of his House regarding the rules, timing, venue of the competitions.
Keep a track of the competitions won by his House students and calculate the marks for his House as per the rules.
Maintain discipline of his House.
Give proper guidance (or seek it from others) for his students contingent in the March Past.
Exploit the talents of other House Tutors for the benefit of his students.
Consult Over All House Warden in case of any clarification required.

He shouldn’t :

request Inter House Competition Incharge to make last moment entries.
Discourage the students from participating in Inter House Competitions
Encourage students to comment on the performance of other House.Criticize upon the performance of other House students

Role of Students' Council/ House Prefects

To encourage and monitor the students to converse in English both inside and outside the school.
To ensure that students of lower classes do not go to the 1st floor during the break.
To ensure that students do not enter their classrooms during break / P.E. period / Music period & Comp. Period on their own.
To ensure that the Tiffin is eaten by the students in a systematic way by sitting in lines just outside their classrooms. None of the students should be seen moving around with the Tiffin which is not eaten.
Monitors should perform their duties as specified to them in a systematic way and maintain a record wherever necessary.
Students council should be actively associated with all the functions, competitions held in the school from time to time.

Members should share the responsibility of maintaining discipline in the school like :-

students shouldn’t run around in the school.
Students should turn out in proper uniform.
Students should use proper language.
Students should show respect to elders.

Duties of Parents

Parents are the means through which the children take this form. This fact, however, doesn’t entitle the parents to own their children. The Almighty has chosen them only to bring for the next progeny and the most they should enact the role of caretaker of God’s creation which has come through them. Feeling of possessiveness will only bring troubles to them in future and will also impede their natural growth.

Before continuing my opinion regarding the duties of parents I feel it a necessity to establish my authenticity over this issue. As it is not necessary for us to play cricket in order to comment over the performance of Indian Cricket team similarly one can master the intricacies involved in parenting a child by observing the different behavioural roles of various parents over the years and the reaction, result, consequence it brings forth in the students we teach and take care of.

However this is not the only point in support to establishing my authenticity over this issue. Understanding the parenting of primary and middle class children for me is no doubt based on only the observation of other parents of my students for I haven’t brought up a child at the level. However, as my daughter Navleen Kaur is 5 plus I’ve the experience of parenting a child of Pre-Primary classes and on the other hand as my cousin Jasvinder Singh did his +2 by staying with me under my guardianship I think I have some right over commenting upon the role of a parent of senior classes. Jasvinder had cleared his +2 with 74% aggregate and has established himself very well on his own in the field of computers. He supplies computer as well as provides faculty to various schools and has taken up AMCs of few good companies.

On the other hand my daughter so far by the grace of God is doing well on her own without much of help or intervention from our side. Hence as both Jasvinder and Navleen are doing well as per the normal set standards (for sure I’m not claiming them to be extraordinary) I feel that both my wife and myself have been upto some extent successful in our endeavour of being parents.

Let’s start …………… responsibilities of parents of - age to 5 years . I’ve written – (minus) for I feel that our responsibilities as parents should start even before the child is born. There are enough number of easy ways & means to make the arrival of the child planned one and not something which just comes on its own. Both husband & wife should right from the beginning consider it to be a joint venture and should

Pets I had during my childhood days

My pet animals

There was a time, I often tell my friends and students, when I had number of pets at home which is difficult to believe. I had rabbits, parrots, a myna, hens and their brood of chickens, two dogs, a cat, a peacock and a deer. The last two animals were gifts given to us by the Forest Ranger who was our next door neighbour. The best part of it was that none of these animals were caged or chained throughout the day. Each had their own places to sleep which no one could occupy. None of them were scared of each other. The parrots were closer to the dogs than to others. They even dared to nibble the ears of the dogs. Once when the nibbling reached the extend of a bite the dog lost its patience and barked at the parrot so ferociously that the parrot stayed away from it for a good period of time. We did eat the eggs laid by the hens but once in a while certain senior hens were allowed to have a clutch of eggs and then hatch them. The sight of the chicks for the initial 4 – 5 days used to be quite pleasing to the eyes. On the other hand the little ones of the rabbit for the initial 10 – 12 days used to look quite ugly. But soon after they were so cute that we couldn’t resist the temptation of chasing & hold them for a while.

The peacock and the deer as well as the cat generally kept to themselves.

During the evenings when fried rice used to be sprinkled in the varrendah almost all the birds and animals used to flock together and eat it. It was really a pleasure to watch them together.

In the evenings the mother hens used to lead the chicks to the cubicals made for them and then the chicks used to try their best to be under the wings of their mothers as snuggly as possible.

Among all the animals we could witness the maternal love of only two of them the hens and the rabbits. Of course, the young ones of the sparrows were also seen flattering around along with their proud parents.

A to Z of English Teaching ( Well! This is only a way to say a few things in this regard)

a) English teaching should be skill-based instead of content base.
b) Classroom teaching should be child centered instead of being teacher centered.
c) Teacher of language should act as a Manager/fecilitator inside the classroom rather than acting as an informer.
d) Learner should be encouraged to improve their spoken English by seeing to it that they are not intimated every now and then by constant correction, i.e., by laying emphasis on accuracy at the initial level itself.
e) Grammar should be taught in a context and not in isolated sentences. Moreover, grammer exercises should be taken up regularly for a little time instead of teaching grammar on only some fixed day, i.e., once in a week and teaching it for the whole period.
In other words grammar should be integrated with MCB and Literature book.
f) Teacher’s Diary should be written exercise-wise. That is, they should mention that how a particular exercise will be taken up.
g) Poems should be read out in the class once or twice and instead of explaining the poem line-wise or word-wise, as used to be done in the traditional method, questions giving an insight into the poem should be asked to the students and answers elicited from them.
h) In order to increase the interaction among the students they should be encouraged to give answers and others should be aksed either to agree or disagree with the answers and give their suggestions if any.
i) Similarly, students should be asked to comprehend the meaning of difficult words from the given context themselves or in peer groups. This kind of process is called as ‘Word Attack’.
j) We shouldn’t tell the students what they can find out for themselves. This way learning becomes interesting and at the same time lasting.
k) Students should be made aware of different text-types and their important features. For example while making them write on some ‘process’ they should be made aware of its features that (i) we should make use of sequence Markers (first, next, then, before, after, simultaneously, alternatively, etc) ii) we should write in Active Voice if the doer is important and should write in Passive Voice if the action is to be emphasized, and iii) we should make use of Simple Present Tense.
l) Exercises given to the students should be scientific in approach. That is, they should proceed from controlled to guided to free expressions.
m) Language learners should be made aware of approapriacy of the language. That is, use of language in different situations.
n) Dramas should be first read out by different students in the class and then enacted also.
o) Best speech / Debate prepared inside the class should be taken up in the Morning Assembly also. This would act as a very good incentive for the students.
p) Similarly Notices / Posters / Graphs prepared by the students should be highlighted on the School Notice Board / Students Notice Board / Class Notice Board.
q) To involve the students in the correction work. For without involving the learners in the correction work checking work done separately will be pedagogically speaking of very little use.
r) To encourage the students to watch / listen / read English articles / News / Serials on / in TV / Radio, Newspaper and novels.
s) We should inculcate reading habit among the students. They should be asked to write a Book Review at least one per month.
t) We should test what is taught and check what is tested. That is our objectives should be very clear-cut.
u) Our question papers should test all the skills.
v) Ambiguity should be avoided in the questions.
w) Rubrics in the question paper should be clear enough to be understood by the students.
x) Questions should be of all the levels.
y) Marks allotted should be clear. Finally in this new approach more emphasis is to be paid on Learn, Learner and Learning than on Teach, Teacher and Teaching.

What we need to do as 1.Parents, 2.Teachers and 3.Students

Keep Your Aspirations Soaring

Life isn’t a bed of roses. There are innumerable points which afflict people all around the world. Can there be any kind of solace that since suffering is there all around we shouldn’t think much about our own sufferings ? So often we come across such instances or stories which end with a moral that as I saw people around me suffering more than myself, my sufferings got over! For example the story where a lame person gets the lesson of his life in the Church where he is shown complaining to the God regarding having made him lame and while doing so he happens to come across a person praying to the Lord and find him on a wheel chair with both the legs missing!. Similarly we are always adviced by elderly, learned persons, through scriptures that we should always took at the down trodden and feel nice about our positions instead of the other way round. But why? Why we shouldn’t look at those who are placed higher than us? Why shouldn’t we have aspirations. I think this kind of moralizing may help the feeble ones to cope up with their life’s limitation. For others who have the knack of having aspirations in the right perspective do get away with their much deserved achievement. Yes, these kind of people also possess the knack of not becoming frustrated due to failures. What we need to learn is an art of living wherein we need to aim pretty high but at the same time maintain a perfect balance over failures. We should learn the knack of treating failures as stepping stones and shouldn’t get discouraged by them at any given point of time by keeping in mind the simple fact that God has certain better assignments for us in future and never lose heart and keep aspirations soaring high. But a the same time remember never to feel satisfied by seeing the life of the down trodden.

“Please come at the earliest”

As I had realized that some I shall be assigned with the task of Principalship somewhere I had thought of preparing my daughter for the temporary separation. She had got adjusted to the secured feeling of sleeping amidst both me and my wife. For a child of 4 years to becomes really traumatic experience to miss at this stage either of the parents.

I know her weakness for keeping a pet dog which was always denied to her on the genuine ground of the house being small. Hence, I thought this to be a better area to venture into. I started talking to her about having a bigger house in which she could keep a pet dog. She was thrilled and had started looking forward to it.

By the time the appointment letter came for me to take up the task around 400 kms away she was mentally prepared. She willingly allowed me to leave for arranging a better school and a bigger house. It was 17th September when I left Korba for Nigahi. I took over Principalship from 18th onwards. On talking to her on phone I was really taken aback when she told me in very clear terms, ‘Papa!, I don’t want a pet dog.’ She wanted me to be with her and failed to understand the reasons behind this separation.

Only if government would understand these little sentiments of people and take proper decisions things would start looking better.

Last whole week my daughter had viral fever and severe cough. I too was unwell. Still I used to go to the STD booth and talk to my wife and when she used to give the phone to my daughter I coundn’t hold my emotions for her voice used to be so weak. Inspite of her weakness her main concern used to be, ‘Papa, did you eat well today?’, I had told her that if she won’t eat well then God won’t provide me with food over here. So she was concerned and kept repeating that, ‘Papa. I feel scared in the night because of your absence, please come at the earliest’.
